Metal and wood

A nomadic household would of course contain lots of items made from metals and from wood. The yurt has a wooden frame, often there is a wooden door with carvings on it. The basic wooden things were made by the nomads themselves, whereas more complicated items (those cut out of a big wooden block and those with rich carvings on it) need the skill of a craftsman.

A craftsman was absolutely necessary for the production of metals. They were made in the cities. The nomadic people had to exchange their own production of cattle or other products against those items of handcraft they were in need of.

There are three major purposes for things made from metals and wood: the decoration (jewellery), the horse and the household.
